OnTrack WNC is looking for volunteers for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program!
Volunteer tax preparers support families to maximize tax refunds and credits. No tax or accounting experience is needed; OnTrack WNC provides training and extensive support to all volunteers.
Tax preparation fees are an expensive barrier for many people because they eat into their much-needed refund or add to an already difficult burden. VITA eliminates this barrier by preparing tax returns for free. For many families, accessing a tax refund can mean replenishing an emergency fund, buying new clothes for the kids, or repairing the family car. That’s why VITA volunteers find the program so rewarding; many have been returning for years. The volunteers are a great bunch of fun, team-oriented people who love to support their clients.
The general structure of the volunteer role includes:
- Training from November to January consists of group Zoom sessions, self-paced online modules, and individual mentoring with a seasoned volunteer. Confirmed dates for evening Zoom trainings are November 9th, November 16th, and January 25th.
- Tax preparation from February to mid-April with shift assignments based on your availability; we ask volunteers to commit to one 4-hour shift per week. Tax preparation services will be provided either from our offices in Downtown Asheville or from your home via Zoom, based on your preference. Note, we expect to remain flexible with schedules and expectations as we constantly adapt to the demands of the COVID pandemic.
- Tax party in May to celebrate the program volunteers.
