Note: While we suggest starting with the class, you are also welcome to jump straight to Step 2.
Step 1: Attend the Class: Debt Payment During Uncertain Times (optional)
Financial uncertainty calls for a new approach to managing money and debts. In this pre-recorded class, we discuss how to use different debt repayment strategies when money is tight. We’ll look at hardship options for different types of debt (such as how to handle your car loan versus your credit card debt) and how to prioritize which debts to pay. Sign up now.
Step 2: Debt Counseling
If you need help figuring out how to pay down your debt or are considering a debt management plan, debt consolidation, or debt settlement, we can help you create a plan to meet your money goals. Our counselor will work with you to create a budget to determine how much money you have available to put towards paying down debt and you’ll review low-cost debt management options that may lower interest, consolidate payments, and eliminate late fees.
To get started with Debt Counseling, fill out our Intake Form or call us at 828-255-5166 option 3.
Note: This session will not cover repayment options for student loans. For more information on student loans, see our DIY guide on managing student loan debt.
Step 3: Debt Management Plan (optional)
For some, our Debt Management Program (DMP) will be a powerful tool for getting back on track with unsecured debt payments such as credit cards, unsecured lines of credit, and personal loans. Many clients appreciate having only one monthly payment for their unsecured debt and find it is easier to incorporate this predictable payment into their budget. After several months of regular, on-time DMP payments, many creditors offer concessions such as discontinuing late fees and reducing the interest rate. Also timely, consistent payments through the DMP can help you begin to rebuild your credit.
If you decide to enroll in the DMP there is a one-time set up fee of $35.00 and a monthly maintenance fee of 10% of your total monthly payment, not to exceed $40.00.
Note: Our Debt Management Plan can only serve consumers living in Western North Carolina. If you are outside of our service area, please find another qualified consumer credit counseling agency by visiting the NFCC website.
